Betty Cone Wrede, 90, of Brandon, SD (formerly Alta, IA) passed at 8 p.m. on August 26, 2009, at St. Luke's Lutheran Home, Spencer. IA, after being comforted by many of her family and friends during the days leading up to her passing. Services will be at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Storm Lake, IA, on Sunday afternoon, August 30, 2009, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Connie Spitzak officiating. Cremation of Betty's remains was performed by Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Betty was born in Schaller, IA, to Zena (an immigrant from Netherlands) and George Quirk on February 10, 1919. She grew up on a farm near Schaller, graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1937, met and married Merrill Cone of Alta on May 23rd, 1937. After living in Chicago for a short time, the young couple settled on the Garberson farm south of Alta until they purchased the Cone family farm east of Alta. Preceding her in death was her first husband, Merrill Cone in 1986, her youngest child, Tom in 2006, her parents and all her siblings. Surviving her are her daughter and son-in-law, Linda & Dennis Brechwald (Spencer, IA), her son & daughter-in-law, Marlin & Linda Cone (Weatherby Lake, MO), her daughter-in-law, Susan Cone (Vancouver, WA) and her husband, Wayne Wrede, Brandon, SD, (formerly of Alta, whom she married on August 25, 1990), nine loving grandsons & spouses, seventeen loving great-grandchildren, two great-great-granddaughters, the children of Wayne--Diane & Bob Peterson (North Mankato, MN), Dale & Lydia Wrede (Mankato, MN), Dennis & Willie Wrede (Brandon, SD) and Gary & Deb Wrede (Iowa City, IA), two wonderful foreign exchange students from Japan who lived with her and Merrill for a year each, numerous wonderful in-laws and friends whom Betty loved as if they were her own blood relatives, as well as the extended family of Wayne.
Betty was known throughout her life for her spunky nature, fantastic sense of humor, caring feeling for others, incredible relationship with her grandsons and her great-grandchildren and how she gave her life to helping others in need. Had she not been such a dedicated housewife to two farmer husbands, counseling could have/should have become her profession ----not only for family members, but also for friends and others. Those who knew her know that they were likely to reach a busy signal when they tried to call her because she was likely on another call counseling with someone about their life issues!! Of note in her life were trips to Japan to visit the family of Jun Saito (1983), who lived a year with her and Merrill while he attended his senior year at Alta High School, plus trips to Spain, Hawaii, Bahamas, and Australia.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held as a part of her memorial service and anyone wishing to make a contribution with their words of remembrance of Betty's life is invited to do so at a luncheon after the service. Betty will be greatly missed by all who were touched by her spunky life, but her loved ones are happy that she is now in a better place and is providing new life for those who have preceded her in death! Memorials can be made payable to the American Cancer Society for research to help prevent more deaths due to cancer, a dreaded disease which has impacted her death, the death of her first husband, the death of her youngest son and has impacted the life of her surviving son.
