Beulah Viola Shields, the daughter of George and Eva (White) Bigger, was born October 23, 1917 in Manson, Iowa. She graduated from Ruthven High School, where she played basketball, a sport that she enjoyed throughout her life.
Beulah married James Claron Shields on June 30, 1938 in Spencer. Following their marriage, she raised most of the kids on a farm near Milford, and then moved to Spencer, where they farmed for many years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Beulah also enjoyed dancing, playing cards and loved selling taffy at the Clay County Fair, which she did for many years.
Mrs. Shields passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James on October 25, 1979; one son, Jack; a daughter, Sharon Peterson; a great-grandson, Jered Smith; a son-in-law, Raymond Holle; a daughter-in-law, Chris Shields; three brothers: Ralph, Elsie and Floyd and four sisters: Blanche Beddow, Etta Rouse, Myrtle Galbraith and Goldie Hawks.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Jerry Shields and his wife, Gai of Johnston, IA, Shirley Holle of Spencer, Joe Shields of Mechanicsville, IA and Jim Shields of Spencer; one daughter-in-law, Glenda Peterson and her husband, Don of Spencer; a son-in-law, Ken Peterson of Arizona; 15 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; a brother, Harley Bigger of Spencer; sister-in-law, Treva Lannan of Sheridan, WY; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the Grace United Methodist Church.
