Beverly Jean (Metcalf) Scoles was born November 2, 1922, to John and Bertie (Boles) Metcalf, on a farm in Lake Township north of Dickens. After graduating as valedictorian from Lake Center High School in 1940, Beverly enrolled at Iowa State University in the fall of 1940, majoring in Home Economics. Bev met Neil Scoles, her future husband, at ISU in 1942. In 1942, Neil entered the Army and served until the end of WW II. Bev continued her education at Iowa State and wrote letters to Neil almost every day. From 1943-1945, Bev taught school at Gillett Grove, and during the summer went back to ISU to finish her degree. Two weeks after Neil returned home from the service, Neil and Bev were married on September 16, 1945.
Neil finished his schooling at Iowa State in 1947. Neil and Bev lived in Webster City for a while and then returned to the family farm to begin farming with Bev's dad and her brother, Kenneth.
Bev and Neil were blessed with two daughters, Sherry and Cindy. Bev enjoyed sewing for the girls, raising a big garden, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables, bird watching, raising flowers, and traveling with the family all over the United States. The family was also active in the Dickens Methodist Church where Bev taught Bible School, was Women's Society president, and MYF sponsor.
From 1958 - 1970, Bev taught at Gillett Grove and then South Clay High School. Those were such happy times for her as she loved working with her students. She taught Home Ec., English, Government and Economics. All her students were important to her. The style shows she wrote and produced for her Home Ec. classes, and her job as junior class sponsor and all the proms she helped with were extra special times.
During retirement years Neil and Bev spent 16 winters in Arizona where they made many new friends. Bev made crafts, went to water exercise, played 500, and many other activities all the while pushing a wheel chair to get around. The entire family descended on Bev and Neil at Christmas time. Bev loved having her 'kids' come to Arizona. Her grandkids were always a big, important part of her life and they spent many happy times at Grandpa and Grams.
Bev passed away on February 24, 2016, at the Ruthven Care Center. She was proceeded in death by her husband of 68 years, Neil; her parents, John and Bertie Boles Metcalf; her brother Kenneth, sister-in-law, Phyllis, and a stillborn son, John Neil.
