Burdette "Bert" Ernest Menke, the son of John and Ella (Platt) Menke, was born on January 1, 1937, in Calumet, Iowa. He was raised and attended country schools in the area. Bert worked for John Deere in Primghar before entering into the military. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on December 29, 1954. While in the military he was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. He was honorably discharged from the military on October 28, 1958. After the military, he stayed in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he worked on planes for the next 15 years.
Bert started working for Rohlin Construction in Santa Fe, NM and then moved to Waterloo, IA. In 1976, Bert married Roberta Drewelow and to this union two children were born: Meighan and Amy. He settled in Spencer in the late 1980's. He stayed with Rohlin's until his retirement in 2002. Even after his retirement he still helped them out every now and then.
Bert enjoyed going gambling, watching NASCAR and other sports. He always had nice trucks and always kept them clean.
He passed away on August 25, 2012 at his home at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Tom Glackin.
Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters: Meighan Chase and her husband, Curt of Shell Rock, IA and Amy Menke of Waterloo, IA; two granddaughters: Madeline and Abigail of Shell Rock, IA; one sister, Alice Glackin of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
Following the services there will be a lunch served at Legends.
