C. Arnold “Arnie” Walker, 91, of Spencer, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arnie was born January 13, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska to Frank and Verna Walker. His early years were spent in Broken Bow, NE, Maryville, MO and back to Omaha by middle school.
He met the love of his life, Shirley Johansen, in his Senior math class at Benson High School in Omaha. At this time the country was involved in World War II and because of that, Arnie and Shirley both graduated early in January of 1945. Arnie then joined the Army. He chose the Artillery Unit, but as the war was coming to an end, he was sent to help shut down the unit. He was then sent to Fort Sill in Oklahoma. Arnie and Shirley were married January 17, 1946 while he was back at home from leave. To this union, three children were born: Sharon, Steve and Vicki.
Arnie worked in the wholesale beer business for nearly 40 years, starting in Omaha as a sales rep for Storz Beer. He soon moved to Spencer to be a Storz Distributor in Northwest Iowa. The opportunity arose to take on additional business and began distributing Pabst Blue Ribbon and Hamms Beers. Over the course of this career, he distributed over a dozen different brands at times. Following his retirement from the beer business he converted his warehouse to a storage unit business.
Arnie belonged to many service organizations over the years including; the Moose, Eagles, Sertoma, Golden K Kiwanis, the American Legion, VFW and SCORE. He enjoyed collecting antique cars, gardening, playing gin and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Shirley, his daughters, Sharon Jorgensen and Vicki (Ken Johannsen), his daughter-in-law, Sheila Walker; seven grandchildren: Ben (Mandy) Jorgensen, Justin (Misti) Jorgensen, Toshia Johannsen, Ryan (Sharon) Johannsen, Stephanie Zahrt, Stacie (Michael Bjornson) and Jamie Walker (Josh Griffin); and his 14 great-grandchildren: Cale, Quinn, Alex and Sam Jorgensen, Zoe, Zandra and Zarah Zahrt, Tateum and Broedy Casey, Braxton, Alyvia and Brayden Bjornson and Emmersen and Landen Griffin.
