Carl Ernest Abel, the son of Carl August and Hulda (Nobling) Abel, was born March 5, 1915 in Wall Lake, IA. His childhood years were spent in Wall Lake and the family moved to the Greenville area when he was 13 where he completed his education graduating from Greenville High School. After his schooling, he farmed for a few years before entering into the military on December 26, 1942. He served with the U.S. Army during WW II. While in the military he was stationed in Europe and Northern France and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged on October 19, 1945, he then moved back to Greenville.
Carl married Marjorie Shook on January 13, 1946, at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. After their marriage, they made their home near Greenville where they farmed for over 40 years, retiring in 1980. They moved to Spencer in 1990. Carl was an active member of First English Lutheran Church where he served as Elder, Trustee and Sunday school teacher. Carl enjoyed volunteering his time for charitable causes and was a very giving person. He always thought of other people before himself.
Carl passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer on Thursday, September 4, 2014, at the age of 99. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie in 2009; four sisters: Clara, Ella, Esther and Violet; and two brothers, Clarence and Arthur.
Left to cherish his memory are his five sons: Dwight & Debbie of Greenville, IA, Bryce & Vicki Abel of Ames, IA, Brent Abel of Pecos, NM, Clark & Mary of Greenville, IA and Craig & Amy of Ames, IA; one daughter, Kathleen Stauffer & her husband, David of Osage, IA; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 8, 2014 at First English Lutheran Home in Spencer.
