Carl Gustav Winterboer

September 3, 1922 — December 3, 2007

Carl Gustav Winterboer, the son of Dick and Anna Zishka Winterboer, was born September 3, 1922, in Westport Township near rural Everly, IA. His mother, Anna, died when Carl was a very young child. His father raised four sons: Wayne, Howard, Edward and Carl. A relative helped to raise these boys until Dick remarried Viola Zishka. Upon that marriage, there were two more sons: Dickie and Donnie, and three sisters: Norma Jean, Luretha and Mary Ann. Life was hard with mixed family and stress of the farm. Carl left home when he was 15, and had no idea where he was going to live; he spent the first night under the railroad dock in Everly. Parm Boyles found him, took him home and found a family to take him in. The Roy Roskens family was his new family and home. He worked on their farm and attended high school and graduated. He attended college at Central College in Pella, IA, where he played football. Carl married Evelyn Marie Roberts on February 10, 1944, in Spencer, IA. Carl served with the U.S. Navy two years until his honorable discharge. He started farming in 1946 and moved to the family farm in 1948, where they resided for 67 years. Carl grain farmed, did custom silo filling, cut bluegrass and fed cattle. He enjoyed attending his children's school and sporting events. Carl and Ev are members of the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer where all of their children were confirmed. He was a member of the American Legion, Coop Elevator Boards and served on the Everly Community School Board. In 2004, they moved within the city limits of Spencer. Carl enjoyed going to the elevator and visiting with friends. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of his life, and Carl was a generous, loving and caring father and grandfather, who loved people and would lend a helping hand whenever he could. Carl passed away on Monday, December 3, 2007, near Spencer, IA, at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Viola Winterboer; three brothers: Edward, Wayne and Howard Winterboer; one stepbrother, Donald Winterboer; two stepsisters: Luretha Walton and Norma Jean Seaberg and son-in-law, Tom Golden. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Spencer, IA; one son, Denny and his wife, Becky Winterboer of Milford, IA; two daughters: Beverly and her husband, Dale Sorem of Nevada, IA, and Sandra Golden of Nevada, IA; 8 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Dickie Winterboer of Rome, GA; one sister, Mary Ann Perkins of Turo, IA; other relatives and many friends.
