Carla Mae Zenkovich, the daughter of Henry and Annarean (Poeckes) Freking was born on October 14, 1934, in Worthing, South Dakota. Her childhood years were spent in Madrid, Iowa, and Sioux City, Iowa, where she received her education and graduated from Heelan High School in 1952. After graduation she worked for 13 years at an accounting and income tax firm in Sioux City.
Carla married Edward Zenkovich on May 6, 1961, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Sioux City. Following their marriage, they were blessed with three children born in Sioux City. Ed and Carla moved to Spencer in 1974. In 1977, they were blessed (surprised) with twins.
After many years of being a homemaker, Carla began working in the lunchroom at the Spencer High School in 1986, until her retirement in 1996. Carla was a devoted Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. After morning mass, Carla and Ed gathered with friends for coffee and breakfast at Hy-Vee. They enjoyed every get-together playing cards and Rummikub with their friends especially on New Year’s Eve. Carla cherished all her time spent with family, especially her grandchildren.
Carla was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ed; a brother and sister; son, Thomas; and grandson, Tanner.
She is survived by her children: Joe (Denise) Zenkovich of Wahpeton, Terri (Al) Ward of Arnolds Park, Mary (Matt) Hughes of Fostoria, Bob (Lisa) Zenkovich of Spencer, and Shannan Zenkovich of Spencer; 12 grandchildren (Alex, Samantha, Jayme, Megan, Austin, Patrick, Amanda, Tyler, Madison, Gage, Grace, and Kadance); 10 great-grandchildren (Raelynn, Kasen, Brielle, Lennox, Addison, Emmalyn, Fiona, Bennett, Wyatt, and Ander); and special friends, Eldon and Terri Kopel.
