Carlo Johanne Andersen, the son of Hartman and Anna (Lundblad) Andersen, was born July 15, 1918 in Webb, Iowa. Carlo grew up in Gillett Grove, Iowa. He attended the Gillett Grove school and graduated from high school in 1936. He helped his father with the family grocery store and later attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska. Carlo entered the Army in 1941 and served in the field artillery unit in the South Pacific for three years. Upon returning from military service, Carlo owned and operated a grocery store in Everly, IA.
Carlo married Norma Jean Runkle on January 23, 1946. To this union came two sons: Gregory Allen and Kirk Douglas. After selling the grocery store, Carlo worked for Gus Glaser Meats until 1962. He then worked and was part owner of Morony Clothing until his retirement in 1983. Following his retirement, Carlo became an active volunteer in the community. He volunteered at Jefferson School in Brenda Griffin's classroom. Brenda and Carlo became dear friends. He also volunteered at St. Luke's Lutheran Home, delivered groceries for Upper Des Moines and drove cancer patients to Sioux City for cancer treatment. Carlo was also involved and very active in the Golden Kiwanis, where he made valued friendships. He was nominated for "Man of the Year" by close friends, St. Luke Lutheran Home and First English Lutheran Church. He was also an avid woodworker.
Carlo passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Friday, November 21, 2008 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents: Hartman and Anna; one sister, Lilly and one brother, Erling.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Norma Jean of Spencer; two sons: Gregory and his wife, Maria Andersen of Sioux City and Kirk and his wife, Sue Andersen of Spencer; five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters: Jeanette Holiday of Spencer and Marguerette Arthur of Florida; one brother, E.L "Sam" Andersen of Spirit Lake, IA; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Monday, November 24, 2008 at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
