Carmen Alethia Stier, the daughter of James and Emma (Bateman) Harrell, was born June 3, 1940, in Columbia, NC. Her childhood years were spent in Columbia where she received her education. After high school, she attended and graduated from Hicks Academy of Beauty & Culture in Norfolk, VA.
Carmen married Burdette Stier on March 17, 1965, in Columbia, NC. Following their marriage, they lived in Jeannette, PA, Chicago, IL and settled in Mundelein, IL, where Carmen worked as a hairdresser and made their home for 30 years. She was a stay-at-home mom/wife and took up babysitting for over 25 years. Carmen and Burdette moved back to Peterson, IA, shortly after retirement in 1995 to be closer to Burdette's mother. She was an active member of the Mundelein United Methodist Church and Women's Circle, Girl Scout leader, Moraine Council Brownie Troop #68, avid gardener with an insatiable passion for tomatoes, and an unrivaled fondness for cats. Carmen became active with the First Congregational Church, the Peterson Heritage and Women's Auxiliary.
Carmen passed away at Sunset Knoll Care & Rehab Center in Aurelia, IA, on Sunday, April 13, 2014, at the age of 73. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Burdette in December of 2012; and one sister, Abbie Harrell.
