Carol Lucille Albers

February 8, 1923 — January 25, 2019

Royal

Carol Lucille Albers was born February 8, 1923 on a farm near Fostoria, Iowa to Luther and Orpha (Allen) Shatto. Carol attended country school and graduated from Spencer High School in 1942. Following graduation, Carol was the assistant manager of F.W. Woolworth, a five-and-dime in Spencer, a position made possible for a young woman because of World War II.

Carol married Benjamin Albert Albers on March 3, 1946, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. They farmed and made their home on the Albers Family Century Farm southeast of Royal for the next 45 years. Carol worked at Neisner’s at the North Shopping Center in Spencer and later in the business office at Spencer Hospital until her retirement.  She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal for 73 years, where she served with the Altar Guild, as treasurer of BLCW, was a Sunday school teacher for 18 years, and sewed many mission quilts.

Never one to be idle, Carol enjoyed refinishing furniture, jigsaw and word puzzles, bookwork and traveling, was a competitive card player, loved flowers- particularly the Japanese (fern leaf) and heirloom peonies she cultivated, was a meticulous seamstress, and gifted in the art of hand embroidery. Carol was recognized for outstanding work 25 years in a row while exhibiting at the Clay County Fair. The greatest joy of all to Carol was her family. She was their cheerleader, a solid example of how to live a life of faith and service to others. Her family was blessed with countless stories of family history and growing up a farm kid during hard-scrap years. Carol was kind, sweet, and fiercely loyal to all who knew and loved her.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ben in 1992; granddaughter, Laura Albers; siblings, Della Mason, Roy, Lee, and Delmer Shatto; and sons-in-law, Steve Hare and Terry Steffen.

Carol will forever be remembered by her children, Cynthia “Cindy” Hare of Saratoga Springs, NY, Marcia Steffen of Linn Grove, and William “Bill” Albers of Royal; 7 grandchildren including Michael Hare, Steven (Keira) Hare, Katie Steffen, Heidi (Paul) Mogush, Jessob Steffen, Molly Albers, and Sarah Albers; great grandchildren, Benjamin and Gilbert Mogush, Jackson Steffen, and Eleanor “Ellie” Hare, her brother Wayne Shatto of Missoula, Montana; countless nieces and nephews, other relatives and many treasured friends.
