Catherine Mae Nielsen

Catherine Mae Nielsen, the daughter of Thomas Wilkens and Maude E. Caskey Pettit, was born January 3, 1925 in Clay County, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Everly, where she received her education, graduating from Everly High School. Catherine married Otto Popp and to this union, four children were born: Duane, Shirley, Darryl and Geraldine. In 1965, she married James Valentine and to this union a son, James Valentine II was born. Throughout her life, Catherine worked as a saleslady for Avon and was a housekeeper for Plaza One. She married Roy Nielsen on December 20, 1975 in Manson, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in the communities of Manson, Gillett Grove and Everly, where she had since made her home. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Everly. Catherine was also a member of the Eagle's Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and enjoyed Dinner Date. She enjoyed sewing, raising flowers, having coffee with friends at Barb's and spending time with her family and her cats. Mrs. Nielsen passed away at her home in Everly on Saturday, July 7, 2007 at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy in 1986; three brothers: Kenny, Jim and Frank and one sister, Ruth Taylor. She is survived by three sons: Duane and his wife, Frannie Popp of Dayton, IA, James Valentine and his wife, Sara of Cooper, IA and Darryl Popp of Gowrie, IA; two daughters: Shirley Weimer of Ft. Dodge, IA and Geraldine and her husband, Barry Fisher of Paton, IA; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one sister, Clara Wieben of Everly, IA; 3 brothers: Harry Pettit of Brewster, MN, Clifford Pettit of Spencer and Donald Pettit of Sebring, FL; other relatives and many friends.
