Charlene Holcomb

February 19, 1927 — December 29, 2008

Charlene Vivian Holcomb, the daughter of John W. and Ethel Frances Dowd Holcomb, was born February 19, 1927 in Spencer, Iowa. Charlene was handicapped from birth and faced many difficulties on her life's journey. She was educated in the Spencer schools through 8th grade. As an adult, she was able to live independently with family support. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Spencer and attended faithfully as long as she was able. For the past few years, she was a resident of the Fonda Nursing and Rehab Center in Fonda, Iowa, where she enjoyed the church services. She had an uncanny memory for dates, especially birthdays of movie stars. She loved cats, and always had several while in her own home. In the nursing home, she enjoyed her kitty calendars. Charlene also loved and enjoyed her nieces and nephews and was a great story teller. John Wayne movies were her favorite, and she had quite a collection she enjoyed watching. She passed away at the Fonda Nursing and Rehab Center in Fonda on Monday, December 29, 2008 at the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Ione and Thelma and three brothers: Ronald, Kenneth and Herbert Holcomb. Left to cherish her memory are one brother, John and his wife, Marilyn Holcomb of Humboldt, IA; two sisters: Lila Di Berardino and her special friend, Charles Berman of Sabestian, FL and Doris and her husband, Tom Matheny of Columbia, MO; many nieces, nephews and friends.
