Charles George Mills was born on November 24, 1925, to Pearl (Barglof) Mills and Ross Mills on a farm near Greenville, Iowa. He had one older brother, Raymond, and twin younger siblings Fay and Kay. He attended school in Greenville, where he graduated in 1943. Growing up, he was a member of the Friends Church in Greenville. Helping his father with farm chores and fieldwork kindled an interest in a farming career. His love of outdoor activities as a youth fostered lifelong hobbies of hunting, fishing, and trapping.
He met Thelma Skelton in their last 2 years of high school. They lived just a few miles apart, so they rode the bus together and began dating. After high school, Charles farmed with his father and worked with friends and neighbors. Following a couple of years of courtship and completion of Thelma's secretarial training, Charles and Thelma were wed at the Little Brown Church near Nashua in October, 1946. Together, they rented their first farm beginning in the 1947 crop year. They began a family the next year. They had an opportunity to purchase 200 acres in 1962, at which time their fifth son was born. Their dream goal continued to be realized on that same farm for the next half century. They sold the farm in 2012 and eventually settled at Riverview Terrace in Spencer. Charles passed away at St Luke's nursing home on Sunday, March 8th at the age of 89, following a brief hospitalization for pneumonia.
Charles was an active church member all his life, serving primarily as trustee. His community service was marked by nine years on the Sioux Rapids Community School Board, Gustafson Lake Board, township representative on the local fire board, and on the Sioux Rapids Retirement Center Building Committee.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Ross and Pearl, his brother Raymond and sister Fay Lanz, and great grandson, Silas Mills. His survivors include wife Thelma of Spencer, sons Dennis (Karen) of Cedar Falls, Darrel of Winterset, Dale (Judy) of Nora Springs, Alan (Susan) of Sioux Rapids, and Kevin (Sandra) of Algona, and brother, Kay (Thelma) Mills of Raymore, Missouri. Fourteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren have blessed Charles' life.
