Chris Irvin Woodall

November 19, 1925 — July 5, 2013

Sutherland

Chris Irvin Woodall, the son of Phillip and Lena (Toft) Woodall, was born on November 19, 1925, on a farm near Royal. Chris attended elementary school at Clay Center #5 country school and graduated in 1943 from Royal High School. This summer was the celebration of Chris' 70th class reunion. Enlisting in the U.S. Army June 3, 1952, in Omaha, Chris served his country during the Korean War. After basic training in El Paso, Texas, he was stationed in the state of Washington guarding nuclear warheads. While in the service, Chris married Wanda Lee Snow on August 19, 1953, in Benton City, Washington. After he was discharged from the Army June 1954, the couple lived in Spencer, Iowa, where Chris worked for a gas company. In 1955 they moved to a farm west of Royal, and later the two purchased the farmland and acreage with the house and buildings. Chris farmed, milked cows, and raised livestock during the next forty years. Confirmed on March 17, 1940, Chris was a long-time, active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He served on numerous committees including the building committee, and he held offices on the church council and as a volunteer laborer for many projects. An active leader in 4-H youth groups for many years, Chris especially enjoyed the livestock tours and Clay County Fair activities and judging. After leaving his leadership roles, he continued to be an avid fan following grandchildren and great-grandchildren with 4-H and FFA projects. Even though Chris semi-retired from farming in the 90's, he continued to help on the farm whenever he could. A large part of later years was dedicated to the American Legion. Chris was proud to be an American supporting Legion activities and observances with volunteer time and energy. He further supported his community by driving and delivering for the Meals-on-Wheels program. He was always willing to lend a hand for a friend or neighbor. Chris passed away at Sanford Critical Care Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD, July 5, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers William and Burdette; and wife Wanda. Blessed to have had him in their lives are his five children and spouses: Cynthia (Lew) Obright of Underwood, MN; Craig (Barb) Woodall of Hartley, IA; Connie Claus of Spencer, IA; Carolyn (Tom) Farmer of Clear Lake, IA; and Jay (Starr) Woodall of Sutherland, IA: 14 grandchildren: Abby Obright, Christopher (Amanda) Woodall, Heidi Woodall, Sarah (Matt) Dehrkoop, Lenah (Shane) Meyer, Charlie (Jade) Woodall, Andrew Claus, Phillip Claus, Elizabeth Claus, Jake (Amanda) Farmer, Paxton Farmer, Carson Farmer and Nicole (Justin) Lange; 9 great-grandchildren: Lexi, Isabel, Gracie, Regan, Grant, Alexa, Avery, Aubrey and Haleigh; brother Ted Woodall of Royal, IA; two sisters Norma (John) Sanders of Dallas, TX and Phyllis Rukes of Spencer, IA; and many dear relatives and friends.
