Spencer

Known to many and loved by most also known as Daddy to me and Papa to my Babes will be missed more than words will ever describe.

Christopher was born in Mason City Iowa to Jan and Aug Gehler on March 24 1961 where he attended school until his early teenage years when the family moved here to Spencer Iowa, where he graduated Spencer High School in 1979 and went on to masonry school in Sheldon Iowa earning his degree in masonry an almost lost trade.

My dad was a very intelligent man he would often have nothing but a piece of paper and a construction pencil to plan many of his projects however he could turn the most non-legible scribble that only he could read in to many beautiful businesses and homes that are still standing today, not only here in Spencer, but all over the Midwest and Texas, where he lived for a few years after he graduated.

When he moved back from Texas and came back to Spencer somewhere in the midst of his success with his business and his well-known extracurricular activities, I was born in 1991 and from the time he named me Brooke Marie Gehler by flipping a coin at the hospital I was often his little side kick. His nickname for me was and always will be Little Girl he taught me how to lay brick, block mix, pour concrete, bid jobs, drive and run his equipment and be a boss. In fact, as people that worked for my dad will recall me standing at the job with my pink wheel barrel full of mix and my little mason trowel in my hand at all of a few years old yelling at them to get back to work or they weren’t getting paid and they had to listen to me while my dad sat from afar and laughed.

Many of my fondest memories are those of which I was with my dad even later in his life when we had our differences or he was scaring boys away from his house everything he told me about the world and life has stuck with me. Work, work, work, money, money, money was one of many sayings he had always helping me but always making sure I went to work and taught me that the world outside of the one he built around me was a far cry from beautiful.

With that said my dad had a heart of gold he would do anything for anyone he was never one to care much about material possessions he believed alot in matter of principle and old school practices things that are now almost forgotten.

Later in his life despite being somewhat ill at times he loved being around his grand babies Taitem and Lexie on his worst day when I knew he was being grumpy I would being them and his whole world lit up he taught them all the good cartoons, how to play the original Nintendo, ride the family toys around the farm, how to mow the lawn I even had Taitem ask me one day if he could get a job because he wanted to buy his own toys.

My dad was a very complex person and loved my many who knew him I consider myself very fortunate to have such an amazing person as my Father for the short amount of time that we got to be together on earth as sad as it is i know as he was always in life he will always be watching over me and my family.

My dad always said it’s never goodbye just later on I never knew what that meant till now.
