Claire Powell Wood was born on the Linnwood stock farm located north of Linn Grove, Iowa on October 27, 1914. Claire passed away on August 6, 2011 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Wood, father, Elmer Powell, birth mother, Miriam Powell, stepmother, Ruth Powell, twin sister, Clariss Witt, sister, Mildred Roberts, and sister, Marvel Powell. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Joan Peters and stepson, Larry Wood and many relatives and friends.
She obtained her elementary and high school education at Linn Grove and college degrees at the University of Buena Vista and the State University of Iowa. She taught school in numerous schools in the area including the Spencer Community School and during WWII taught for the United States Air Force. When asked, 'What did you teach?' she loved answering with, 'Everything but football.'
Upon retiring in 1978, she and her husband, Reuben taught ballroom dancing to people in northwest Iowa. The Missouri Waltz was her favorite song to dance to. As an educator, she has touched the hearts and minds of countless students who, I'm sure, will remember her and miss her, especially at class reunions where she was a regular participant.
Claire was an avid horsewoman and gardener, enjoyed golf and played a wicked hand of cribbage and bridge. She loved reading and thought that those that didn't read were missing out on one of the greatest gifts of life.
The family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the Iowa Public Broadcasting Service, Spencer Municipal Library, or the First Congregational Church of Spencer.
