Clairice "Evelyn" Smith

 (Clairice) Evelyn Smith, the daughter of Dwight and Josie (Ingham) Fernau, was born July 22, 1936, in Swaldale, IA. Her childhood years were spent in different places in NW Iowa, where she attended school and graduated from Sioux Rapids High School. She then graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA. 

    Evelyn worked as a nurse in Davenport, IA, Veterans Hospitals in Chicago and St. Louis, Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids, IA, as well as St. Luke’s, Longhouse, and Northshire in Spencer, IA. She married Donald Smith on March 18, 1995, in Everly, IA.

    Evelyn enjoyed quilting, playing cards, gardening, and wintering in Arizona. She was a member of the Everly Methodist Church and Eastern Star.

    Evelyn passed away at the age of 87 on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at the Ruthven Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her sister Helene Quillin.

    Left to cherish her memory are her 2 sons, Byron Paul of Sioux Falls, SD, and Drake (Katie) Paul of Longmont, CO; 3 grandchildren, Tyler, Jonathan, and Kylie; 2 great grandchildren, Justin and Maggie; her sister, Elizabeth Brugman of Sun City West, AZ; other relatives; and many friends.
