Clarence Elvin Birchard

June 19, 1921 — February 14, 2010

Clarence Elvin Birchard, the son of Clayton and Myrtle Irene (Prentice) Birchard, was born on June 19, 1921, in Gillett Grove, IA. He was raised, and received his early education by attending country schools, in the Gillett Grove area. Clarence married Alma Roskens on February 23, 1949 in Fostoria, IA. Following their marriage, they lived in the rural Fostoria area. In 1954, they moved to a farm between Everly and Spencer. In 1975, they moved to the Village of Maywood north of Milford and in 1983 they moved to Alma's family farm near Everly. Clarence loved the farm life; he loved to plant things and watch them grow. In addition to farming he also worked at Cashway Lumber and Lumberman's Millwork, driving truck and doing carpentry work. Clarence also worked at the Spencer Golf and Country Cub, while he was in his 70's. He loved working with his hands; he remodeled their homes, made furniture pieces for his family and liked to carve, especially when the couple wintered in Texas. He liked to golf and go fishing and always found time to attend his children's high school activities. Clarence was a charter member, a deacon and elder of the Hope Reformed Church in Spencer. He also attended the First Reformed Church north of Everly until its closing. Clarence passed away at the Spencer Hospital with his family by his side, on February 14, 2010, at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Randy and two sisters: Madge Warner and Jenny Quee. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Alma of Everly, IA; two sons: John and his wife, Linda of Brooklyn Park, MN and Larry and his wife, Roxanne of Lowell, AR; his daughter, Vicky Henderson and her husband, Roger of Luverne, MN; his daughter-in-law Kae Birchard Loverink of Austin, CO; 5 grandchildren; two brothers: Dale and his wife, Lois of Tucson, AZ and Herbert and his wife, Linda of Fostoria, IA; one sister, Gladys Tibbetts of Peterson, IA; other relatives and friends.
