Clarice 'Tex' Raye Hand

March 8, 1945 — June 27, 2012

Clarice Raye Hand, the daughter of Clifford and Lillian (Schulke) Carmicheal, was born March 8, 1945, in Red Oak, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Red Oak, where she received her education at Red Oak Schools. She furthered her education by attending cosmetology school. Clarice had many jobs, including hairstylist, food service, waitress, but most of all, wife and mother were the titles she really loved. Clarice married George Hand on May 14, 1967, in Red Oak, Iowa. To this union was born two sons, James Micheal and Donald Clifford. Following their marriage, they were stationed many places in the world, including San Antonio, TX; Bellevue, NE; Misawa, Japan; Chicksands, England; and Southern California. After retirement from the Air Force, the family moved to Royal, Iowa, and eventually to Spencer, Iowa. Clarice was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer and a frequent visitor to Spencer Sewing. Clarice enjoyed sewing, bowling, traveling, going to church, and spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Clarice passed away at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the age of 67. Clarice was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Buena (Bea) and Betty. Left to cherish her memory are her husband George of Spencer; children James Hand and his wife Shawna of Bellevue, NE, and Don Hand and his wife Ann of Papillion, NE; brother James Carmicheal of Red Oak, IA; sisters Bernice Baird of Morton Mills, IA and Jean; niece Teresa Baird of Comanche, TX; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; other relatives; and a multitude of friends. While living in Spencer, she was known as either Clarice or Claire. However, since the age of about four, with her cowgirl dress, two six guns, and her hat, to her parents and siblings she was just "TEX".
