Clayton Lyman Hill, the son of Arthur and Margaret (Hulser) Hill, was born August 6, 1921, in Sioux City, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Sutherland where he received his education and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1939. Following graduation he went to work for the Iowa State Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, IA for two years.
On August 8, 1942, Clayton was united in marriage to Betty Hash in Cherokee. Clayton then joined the Army Air Corps where he flew B-17 bombers. His first combat mission occurred on D-Day during WWII. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Clayton moved back to Sutherland and started Hill's Dairy and later Hill's Drive Inn, which he owned and operated for 16 years. He then went to work for the State of Iowa as a tax auditor until his retirement in 1984. During the next six years, Clayton lovingly took care of Betty as she battled cancer.
On November 10, 1990, Clayton was united in his second marriage to June Smith. They enjoyed going to Arizona and traveling in their R.V.
Clayton enjoyed woodworking, carving, and talking on his Ham radio. He also loved to sing, hunt, fish, and play cribbage, but most of all he enjoyed being around his family.
He served many years as a member of the American Legion, Ruritan, the United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, and was very active in singing in the Church choir. He also served on the Sutherland School Board and the Sutherland City Council.
