Cleo Frances Ihry was born August 120, 1919 on a farm west of Royal, Iowa, to Jean Baptist and Nellie (Huss) Ihry. She attended elementary school and received her high school diploma from Royal, Iowa. Soon after, she graduated from Sioux City Academy of Cosmetology. She started her first beauty shop in Washta, Iowa and there she met Thomas Garrod. They were united in marriage on September 23, 1939 and lived in Cherokee, Iowa. Still as a newlywed bride, she was left anxiously awaiting the return of Tom who was serving overseas during World War II. Upon his return they reunited in love and together in loyalty their lives took them to several destinations. During this time their family expanded with the arrival of three girls, Sharon, Lynda and Connie. In each destination Cleo established a beauty shop. Besides her daughters, many clients appreciated not only her pin curls and sets but also her charismatic demeanor.
As Tom and Cleo's family grew from three girls to three son-in-laws, nine grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, their social activities grew too. Tom and Cleo actively attended their family's music concerts, drama and acting performances, speech and various sporting events. Cleo enjoyed bowling, playing bridge and hosting other card clubs. Together with Tom she enjoyed traveling, dancing and golfing. Among many cherished memories held by her family and other acquaintances she will be remembered most for her Catholic faith and her devotion to the rosary.
