Clyde Grant Hale was born on December 21, 1928 to Fred and Mae (LeMar) Hale in Clay County. He graduated from Peterson High School in 1947 and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict until 1952. He worked for General Motors for 22 years in California where he worked his way up to plant superintendent.
He returned to Spencer, Iowa where he married Marjorie Nelsen Rouse on August 13, 1971. From previous marriages, the two had seven children: Kathy (Bernie) Olberding of Dunnell, MN; Connie (Ed) Locker of Grinnell; Harlan (Katie) Rouse of Hospers; Dan (Missy) Hale of Sutherland; Shannon (Ron) Goth of Cherokee; Shawn Hale of Cherokee; and Ryan (Char) Hale of Sutherland. He also had 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, who he loved dearly.
After returning to Iowa, he worked for Spencer Ready Mix and then for Morton Buildings where he retired after 18 years in 1990.
Clyde was an avid sportsman, participating in fast-pitch softball, hunting, and golf, but his all-time favorite was fishing. He could often be found sitting by the river, soaking a line (or two) during his time off and especially after retirement. He loved playing pinochle and almost always won...and his family jokingly told him that it was because he was the scorekeeper! He relished his time with his grandchildren and was a practical joker until the end. He also loved Iowa Hawkeye sports and was an Oakland Raiders fan.
He was a member of the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 and the Grace United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob, his granddaughter Stacy, and his grandson Kevin.
He is survived by his wife Marge, his children, 15 grandchildren and his great-grandchildren, along with his brothers Raymond (Wilma) Hale of Rembrandt; Bill Hale of Spencer; Harrison (Phyllis) Hale of Sioux Rapids; and sisters Marlene (Don) Fassler of Watertown, SD; Germaine Jessen of Gillett Grove; and Rachel (John) Krenk of Ida Grove. He will be dearly missed by all.
FISHERMAN'S PRAYER
God grant that I may fish until my dying day.
And when I come to my
last cast,
I'll then most humbly pray,
When in the Lord's safe
landing net,
I'm peacefully asleep.
That in His mercy I'll be judged,
As good enough to keep.
