Cory "Gompy" Thomas, the son of Ray and Shirley (Cole) Thomas, was born July 13, 1955, in Cherokee, Iowa. Cory and his sister Ginny were raised in Cherokee, and he graduated from Washington High School in 1973.
On June 29, 1974, Cory married his high school sweetheart Sandy George. In 1975 they moved to Spencer where Cory was the agent for Iowa Parcel.
In 2001, Cory and Sandy realized a dream when they moved to "The Christmas Tree Farm," which became his little piece of Heaven.
Cory, an Idea Man, had tremendous plans for their farm and his business, Christmas Tree Farm Creations. Cory's laser business provided him the opportunity to use his talents to give others lifelong memories.
During this time Cory became "Gompy" to his wonderful grandchildren and countless others. Christmas became his favorite time of the year and he looked forward to friends, old and new, coming down the lane.
After a valiant fight with pancreatic cancer, Cory passed away at home on Monday, August 23, 2010, at the age of 55. If not for the prayers and support of Gompy's Army and CaringBridge, his battle would have been so much harder. He was preceded in death by his father, and his in-laws, Bob and Margaret Ann George.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Ruthven; his children: Justin of Mundelein, IL, Stacie Huckfelt and her husband, Todd, of Spencer, and Cory and his wife, Jennifer, of Brandon South Dakota; 8 grandchildren: Henry & George Thomas, Hailey, Alyssa & Thomas J. Huckfelt, Paige & Kyan Thomas and Taylen Sichmeller; his mother, Shirley Thomas of Cherokee, Iowa; sister, Ginny and her husband, Mike, of Cleghorn, Iowa; Murphy's Tap: Trish Curtis, Nick George & Lorrie Lockwood; numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
