Dale Schmidt

Dale Edwin Schmidt, the son of John and Mary (Ringering) Schmidt was born on February 17, 1927 in rural Everly, IA. His childhood years were spent in the rural areas of Everly and Okoboji, IA. He graduated from Okoboji Township High School in 1945. Dale worked construction before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1950. He served until his Honorable Discharge in 1952. He married Mary Sonius on February 20, 1956 in LeMars, IA. They moved to Spencer, IA, where he built the house they lived in. He worked for Morton Buildings, and after retirement, he worked part-time for Sioux Rapids Lumber. Dale enjoyed woodworking, toy making in the basement, farming, and was an avid reader. He was hardworking, quick-witted and one of his biggest joys was working on projects with his grandkids. He was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church. Dale passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at his home, at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Alfred, and a son-in-law, Jay Hermstad. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary G. Schmidt of Spencer, IA; 2 children, Carol Hermstad of Sioux Rapids, IA and Steve (Renee) Schmidt of Gardner, KS; 2 grandsons, Greg and David; 3 brothers, Richard (Betty) Schmidt of Spencer, IA, Walter (Lillian) Schmidt of Spencer, IA, and Robert (Audrey) Schmidt of Hartley, IA; other relatives; and many friends.
