Daniel H. Maxwell, son of Daniel W. and Margaret (Slaven) Maxwell was born April 26, 1918 in Portsmouth, IA. He was the oldest of six boys and graduated from high school in Woodbine, IA. Dan was a US Army Sergeant, serving in WWII from 1941 to 1946 as an engineer in the Europe, Middle East and Africa Theatre of Operations.
Dan married Evangeline Gustafson April 4, 1942, while stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood. They moved to Spencer in 1946, when Dan began working at the Post Office.
He retired as Postmaster in 1981. He was very active in many organizations, including the American Legion, Spencer Area Shrine Club and ATV Corp, Masonic Lodge, Rotary, United Methodist Church, Chamber of Commerce, and Spencer Ambassadors. In 1971, he was proud to be recognized as Citizen of the Year.
Dan and Van celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2002. They loved big band music and ballroom dancing. Following their retirement, they maintained residences in Spencer and Pharr, TX. Dan was also an avid card player; among his favorites were bridge, cribbage, and pinochle.
Dan passed away at Riverview Assisted Living in Spencer on Friday, August 12, 2011 at age 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Van; and five brothers, Donald, Duane, Harold, Russell, and Dale.
Left to celebrate his life are his son Dennis and his wife Ellen of Valparaiso, IN; daughter Denise of Minnetonka, MN; granddaughters Alison and Natalie Maxwell of Chicago, and other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at the Warner Chapel at 11:00A.M., on Tuesday, August 16, 2011.
Masonic Services will be conducted by the Evening Shade Lodge #312 A.F.& A.M. of Spencer following the services at the chapel.

Military Services will be conducted at the gravesite by the American Legion - Glen Pedersen Post #1 of Spencer.
A lunch and time of fellowship will take place following the graveside services at the Wesley Room at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in Dan's name be sent to: Spencer Area Shrine Club - P.O. Box 271 - Spencer, Iowa 51301, to benefit the Shriner's Children's Hospital and the Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund.
