Darlene Virginia Mills, the daughter of Ora George and Florence (Rhodes) Boardman, was born July 27, 1919 in Veblen, SD. Her childhood years were spent in Greenville, Iowa, where she received her education, graduating from Greenville High School in 1937.
Darlene married James “Roy” Mills on April 12, 1937 in Jackson, MN. To this union Darlene welcomed four stepchildren into her life and together added their children: Karen, Colleen, James Roy, Mary Kathleen, Roger Bryce, Kevin & LuAnn. After their marriage, they lived in Webb, Iowa, where she was a stay at home mom. After Roy’s death in 1975, she went back to school to receive her CNA Certificate and she worked for 10 years at the Sioux Rapids Nursing Home until her retirement. She was a previous longtime member of the Baptist Church in Webb. Darlene enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved to care for many animals. She always had a big garden, was a great cook, canned a lot of produce, worked in the fields, enjoyed family history and was a great storyteller. She wrote articles for the “Good Old Days” Magazine. Darlene loved to hunt raccoon with the men.
She passed away at the Pocahontas Community Hospital on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at the age of 100. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy in 1975; two sons: Roy James and Roger Bryce Mills and a sister, Dorthea Boardman; three granddaughters: Dawn, Pam and Tara; 1 great granddaughter, Makinley; a son-in-law, Leland.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Karen Franklin of Odessa, MO, Colleen (Richard) Burt of Urbandale, IA, Mary Kathleen (Jean) Linn of Des Moines, IA, Kevin (Wendy) Mills of Marathon, IA, and LuAnn (John) Reese of Laurens, IA; grandchildren; great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
