Darrel Dean Malm, the son of Victor and Jenny (Crone) Malm, was born on September 28, 1929, in Ruthven, Iowa. He was raised by Elk Lake and received his early education attending country school in Wild Rose Township and then high school in Gillett Grove, graduating in 1947. Following school, he entered into the military on October 16, 1950, serving in the U.S. Army at Camp Polk, LA. In March of 1951, he went to Japan, returning to Ft. Lee, VA in 1952. He decided to make the military his career where he stationed in France, Korea, Germany, Thailand and then Washington D.C. where he decided to end his military service after 22 years. He was honorably discharged on January 31, 1973.
On December 19, 1950, while he was in the service, Darrel married Doris Baxter in Jackson, MN. Following his military career, he returned to Spencer and worked for the post office for 20 years, retiring in 1993. Darrel also had a lawn care business for another 15 years. Darrel was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the V.F.W. in Spencer and American Legion in Ruthven. He liked to play golf, bowling and gardening. He and Doris enjoyed fishing together and made several trips to Minnesota and they enjoyed their time while in the military, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Darrel passed away on September 15, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family, at age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers: Loren, LaVern Duke and Lowell in Infancy and one sister, Cleo Hancock.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Doris of Spencer, two sons: Donald and his wife, Deb of Rochester, MN and David and his wife, Kim of Tampa Bay, FL; 3 grandchildren: Jennifer Yetmar and her husband, Nick of Ames, IA, Mark Malm of Spencer, and Chamille Malm of Tampa, FL; 2 step grandchildren: Tony and Kaylee; Tracey Pierson just like a daughter and her husband, Brad of Spencer; one sister, Ardyce Gritten of Ontario, CA; other relatives and friends

Funeral Services will be 1:30P.M.,Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
