Darrell Duane Johnson passed away at Longhouse Care Center on Friday, September 16, 2016. He was born in Spencer, Iowa, on April 12, 1928, to parents, Ralph Henry and Edith Delilah (Simmons) Johnson. He was better known to everyone as "Duke." He graduated from Spencer High School, and lived his entire life in Spencer. As a young man, he worked at Spencer Grocery, and cared for his mother. After her passing, he lived with his sister, Shirley and husband, Leo for many years.
Duke was well known by many in his hometown. He loved to visit with people. He enjoyed having many dogs throughout his life and was often seen with them and took them for rides around town. He often enjoyed playing Bingo, and watching the roller skaters at the local skating rink. Duke was very proud of his nieces and nephews. He could tell you facts and information about any house, building or street in Spencer. He was a very selfless, kind and gentle man. He lived his last few years at Sunset Apartments and enjoyed the people there very much.
Duke outlived all four of his siblings and missed them terribly: Ralph Johnson, Jr., John Johnson, Louie Johnson and Shirley Nuzum. He also missed his parents; nephews, Ronnie Wayne Johnson, and Ken Ahrens whom he was very close. Left to cherish his memory are his nieces and nephews. Duke lived 88 years and was a blessing to all who knew him.
