Darrell Ray King

August 4, 1918 — February 10, 2009

Darrell Ray King, the son of Silas and Grace Bailey King, was born August 4, 1918, in Dickens, Iowa. He received his early education and graduated from the Dickens High School. In 1942, Darrell married Lurvene Darr from Ayshire, Iowa. Following their marriage, they rented land south of Dickens and then north of Everly before purchasing what remains the family farm north of Gillett Grove. He retired from farming in 1980. Darrell loved to fish as long as the fish was a Walleye. Many trips were made to Blackduck Lake and the Missouri River. In his early years a wintertime bowling league was a not so favored pastime, one that ended when he flung his ball and shoes into the Little Sioux River. From his early years till his last, cribbage was his favorite game. On April 15, 1979, Darrell married Eleanor Stoddard. Darrell passed away on February 10, 2009, at Longhouse Residence in Spencer at the age of 90. He is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Lurvene. Darrell found it ironic that he had out drank, out smoked and out lived most of his friends. Darrell is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Spencer; his two sons: Wayne and his wife, Louise King and family of Oxnard, CA and Wendell and his wife, Diane King and family of rural Dickens, IA; sister Lois Gritten and brother Floyd King; other relatives and friends.
