Darwin "Bud" Neil Goodchild, the son of Lester and Gladys (Grove) Goodchild, was born July 3, 1931 in Havelock, IA. He attended school in Havelock, Lake Center and Papillion, NE. Bud served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed in Germany.
On June 15, 1955, he married Ruth Mohr at Zion Lutheran Church in Ayrshire, IA. They are the parents of one son, Dave. Bud and Ruth farmed near Gillett Grove and Webb. During this time, Bud also operated a commercial feed grinding business. Starting in 1974, he worked for the Clay County Road Department, until his retirement in 1992. Bud was a member of the Iowa-Minnesota Chuckwagon Association. As the owner of the Gold G. Wagon, Bud and his driver and outriders raced several times at the Clay County Fair and at numerous other events. Bud was a lifelong member of the Amvet of Havelock and the V.F.W. of Spencer. He was also a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church for several years.
Bud loved his two grandsons and enjoyed spending time with them. After his retirement, he looked forward to playing pinochle with his friends at the V.F.W. and volunteering to help others with a variety of projects. His other interests included hunting, fishing, and traveling.
Bud passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Bonnie and her husband, Bill Scott; a nephew, Doug Goodchild; sister-in-laws: Ruth and Joyce Mohr and a brother-in-law, Bob Bowman.
Bud is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth of Spencer; one son, Dave of Spencer; two grandsons: Jason and his wife, Kristi and Justin; two brothers: Jim (Darlene) and Dennis Goodchild; also several nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Spencer.
A Military Flag Presentation will be held following the services at the church.
