Darwin C. "Scooter" Zahrt, the son of Fred and Rachel (Roberts) Zahrt, was born August 24, 1932 in Rossie, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Rossie area where he received his education, graduating from Rossie High School. Following high school, he served with the National Guard. He later attended Buena Vista College where he received his teaching certificate in elementary education.
Darwin married Ann Lauritsen on July 8, 1951 in Webb, IA. Following their marriage, he taught school and coached at Cornell, Central of Fenton and Sioux Valley (Peterson). They later moved to Spencer, IA, where he was an educator for the Spencer Community school system for many years. He was also a well-known announcer for KICD for several years. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. Darwin and Ann were instrumental in the immigration and continued care of several Laotian families to northwest Iowa. During his years, Darwin was a member of the Clay County Board of Supervisors, was instrumental in starting the Little Tiger Relays, started the KICD Birthday Show and played semi-pro baseball in his early years and later enjoyed coaching. During the summer months off during teaching, he worked several odd jobs throughout the years.
He passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the age of 81. Scooter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ann in 2010; son, Curtis Zahrt; 2 granddaughters: Katie Huffman and Abby Jo Zahrt; three brothers: Fred, Roger and Gary Zahrt; and sister, Suzanne Edington.
Darwin is survived by his four children: Craig Zahrt of Spencer, IA, Lynn and Mike Huffman of Spencer, IA, Clark and Jolene Zahrt of Spencer, IA, Cory and Misty Zahrt of Adel, IA; daughter-in-law, Barb Zahrt of Fargo, ND; two sisters: Beverly Jeppeson of Spencer, IA and Sandra Dotson of Milford, IA; 14 grandchildren: Chancy, Cheyanne & Tanner Zahrt, Andrew Huffman, Kerri Robinson, Kristena Oviatt, Kelsie Bacaam & Kourtney Huffman, Shane Zahrt, Megan & Jesse Zahrt & Corbin, Chloe & Chase Zahrt; 13 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; his Laotian family; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held 1:30 P.M., Monday, March 24, 2014 at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. A military flag presentation will be conducted by Glen Pedersen Post #1 - American Legion following the services at the church.
