David Hugh Smith

      David Hugh Smith, the son of Russell and Marian (Johnson) Smith, was born on June 25, 1936 in Spencer, Iowa. He grew up in Spencer where he also attended school, graduating from Spencer High School in 1955. Following high school he attended Barber College in Sioux City, IA. 

     On August 10, 1958, David married Betty Speck at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. David worked as a barber in Spencer and Hartley and also was a janitor for Hartley Schools. He then lived in Spirit Lake where he worked at StyleCraft, before settling back in Spencer. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church. David was a member of the committee in Spencer which lobbied for the handicapped accessibility to sidewalks. He enjoyed playing cards, boating, roller skating, and spending time with his family. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved to cheer them on to victory. One of his fondest memories was building the family lake home with his brothers, brother-in-law, and sons. He was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of living on Lake Okoboji.  

     He passed away on Wednesday, March 22 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Manson, Iowa, at age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents; his 3 brothers: Roger, Jimmy and Terry and his sister, Pat (Seaton).  

     Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty of Estherville, IA; two sons: Darrin Smith and his wife, Christy of Estherville, IA and Kevin Smith and his wife, Pamela of Columbia, MO; 6 grandchildren: Jessica (Dustin), Jay (Haylee), Jonah (Josi), Erika, Cooper, and Benton; great granddaughter, Janessa; his two sisters: Peggy Egerson of Okoboji, IA and Janice Brugman of West Union, IA; other relatives and friends.  

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, March 29 at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
