David Klaas Oltman, the son of Ben and Hilda (VanderVeen) Oltman, was born on August 24, 1950, in Grundy Center, Iowa. He was raised and received his early education in Dike but returned to Grundy Center to finish his schooling, graduating from Grundy High School in 1968. After high school he worked at Spokesman Press for a short time and then went to work for John Deere.
On June 23, 1973, David married Betty Everts in Holland, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple continued to live in Grundy Center until 1987, when they moved to Spencer. David started working at Heartland Press, he enjoyed what he did and eventually worked his way up to scheduling manager. The company went through several transitions, before closing their doors. David went to work for Clay County doing maintenance work for a couple of years and then went to Polaris as an assembly operator, until he had to leave due to health reasons.
He enjoyed attending Iowa Football games for many years and tailgating with his family. He liked to go camping, golf and participate in the Northwest Iowa AM with his sons. David was always there for his children, whenever they needed help, renovating their homes. He never missed his kids and grandkids sporting events. David was a member of Hope Reformed Church and was an active in the church in every community he lived in.
David passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ralph.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty of Spencer, IA; his children: Jeremy (Carrie) of Pella, IA, Heather Katt (Jason) of Orange City, IA, Joshua of Columbus, NE and Jordan (Kiara) of Sioux Falls, SD; his grandchildren: Codi, Johnathan, Jenna, Cooper, Kaelyn, Jaxton, Caden and a future arrival in February of 2021; his brother, Richard Oltman of Des Moines, IA; his sisters: Diane Meyer (David) of Aplington, IA and Joyce Martinson (Rory) Spirit Lake, IA; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
