David Lawayne Nelson

January 23, 1953 — May 6, 2014

Dave was born January 23, 1953 in Spencer, Iowa. The first-born child to Bob and Arlene (Goyette) Nelson he was raised with a younger brother and partner in crime, Donny. He spent his childhood helping out around the family's pharmacy and enjoying summer days on Lake Okoboji. Dave graduated from Spencer High School in 1971 and continued his education through Anethesia school, graduating as a CRNA in 1983. While in school, Dave met and married the love of his life, Suzi Dahl on August 18, 1978. They recently celebrated 35 years of marriage and made an adventure out of life together. Dave and Suzi raised 3 children - Jasmine (Nelson) Marchese, Scott, and Kahley. They raised the family in Spencer and sent all of the children to the University of Iowa. They had some of the best times visiting Iowa City and attending Hawkeye football games with the kids and their friends. Dave is preceded in death by his father Bob Nelson. Dave is survived by his wife, Suzi, his children Jasmine Marchese, her husband Chris and their daughter Malin of San Diego, Scott of Dallas, and Kahley, her partner Kent and their children Teagan and Jax of Omaha. Dave is also survived by his mother, Arlene Nelson of Spencer, his brother Donny, and his wife Pam of Stillwater, Minnesota. Dave also leaves behind so many family members and friends that he loved so much. Dave was happiest while traveling with his best friend and wife- whether it be site seeing in Italy, listening to country rock n roll in Texas, hiking the sunset cliffs in sunny San Diego and most recently playing with his grandbabies. He also enjoyed collecting albums and listening to all types of music, golfing with his buddies, and watching sports with his family and friends. Building friendships was very important to Dave. He made a lot of great friends that meant the world to him. Dave dedicated his life and career to helping others with NW Iowa Anethesia. His positive attitude and charismatic personality were the cornerstones of his being, which guided him everyday as a caregiver. He loved helping make a difference with many of his lifelong friends and colleagues at Spencer Hospital. He was a devout Christian and very active within the Catholic Church. Words cannot express the gratitude to all of his friends and family who helped and supported his family through Dave's journey and treatment. Everyone that knew Dave will remember his caring, gentle soul and his contagious laugh.
