David Francis Rausch, the son of Francis LeRoy and Helen Elaine (Struve) Rausch, was born June 26, 1943 in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Calumet where he received the majority of his education, graduating from Sutherland High School in 1962.
David married Vickie Jones on October 15, 1966, in Dakota City, NE. Following their marriage, Dave spent his entire life in Calumet working in the fertilizer, chemical, agronomy and custom application industry. He started in 1966 at the American Cyanamid Fertilizer plant. In 1973, the plant was purchased by Burt's Farm Service, and in 1976, became C-S Agrow Service. In the early 1970's, Dave helped form Calumet Custom, which applies fertilizer, chemicals, and custom tillage for American Cyanamid and Burt's. Calumet Custom brought the first floater applicator to the area. In the 1980's, Calumet Custom became Agland Custom, which worked hand in hand with C-S Agrow. Dave remained president of Agland until his passing. Dave was respected for his agronomic advice and has helped pioneer GPS/GIS precision agriculture in N.W. Iowa with grid soil sampling, variable rate fertilizer, lime application and yield monitoring. One of Dave's important roles has been helping create jobs in O'Brien County by training and teaching young people in the agronomy and application industry. He was nominated into the Ag Hall of Fame on August 31, 2010, which he was very proud of. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. He was a longtime supporter of the NRA and enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, woodworking and spending time at the trailer up at the lakes.
David passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 following a long illness at his home in Calumet surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis LeRoy Rausch, who was killed in WW II, and his mother and stepfather , Helen and Loyd Rohwer.
