David 'Scott' Hessman

September 6, 1959 — September 11, 2012

Scott Hessman was born to David and Arlene (Jackson) Hessman on September 6, 1959 at the Muscatine Community Hospital in Muscatine, Iowa. At age one, he moved to Ida County, Ida Grove, Iowa, where he spent all of his growing up years. He was the usual country type boy while growing up and at age nine became a member of 4H and this was his beginning in showing cattle and learning how to prepare them for the show. This was his life and he so enjoyed it. He was able to have his cattle at the Bremer farm, due to the fact that he was a city boy and this also provided him with learning from the Bremers. He showed a Shorthorn steer that won 12 out of 13 shows. The steer went on to be the Iowa State Fair Purebred shorthorn and also the Aksarban Champion. The steer was sold to Arby's Roast Beef of Omaha, NE. Sheep and hogs were also some of his projects and he showed and had the Champion Carcass lamb at Aksarban one year. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in May of 1977. After graduation, he spent 2 years at Eastern Iowa Community College in Muscatine, Iowa. He started his Professional Cattle Grooming Business with Gene Doran in 1979, and following that he worked for Duane and Don Hilbert at Algona, IA and then on to Hartman Cattle Co. at Wood River, NE. He was with Fred and Mike Hartman for a few years. He learned the business well during those years with Kenny Bremer, Doran, the Hilbert's and the Hartman's. Following that learning experience, he worked for the following cattle companies: The Jim Morland Family of Eastland, TX, Jim Harrell of Oklahoma, The Travis Otterstad Family of Tuttle, OK, Steve Bonham of Kansas, The O'Dell Family of SE Oklahoma, and the Lautner Family of Jefferson, IA, as well as many others and currently was with the Boyle Families. Scott passed away very suddenly on September 11, 2012 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. With him at the time of death were his father, David Hessman and special friends: Joan Ludvigson and Allen Swanson. Preceding him in death was his mother, Arlene Hessman; paternal grandparents: David and Elma Hessman and maternal grandparents: Ralph and Letha Jackson. Surviving him are his father, Dave Hessman of Spencer and his father's special friend, Joan Ludvigson of Holstein, IA; his brother, Jay; nieces: Jade, Shanti and Sara Abbengast; also, aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends. Quotes from Gene Doran - a close friend of Scott I would hate to estimate how many young boys and girls that Scott helped at various cattle shows and at home across the country to get started in the cattle business. Using the Iowa State Fair as an example--I don't know how many people would come by the cattle barn and would know me and a family would come by that I knew and I would introduce them to Scott and his eyes would light up like two Christmas trees. Scott would then go and look at their calves and see what needed to be done. Next thing he would soon have his clipper in hand and would finish the calves to go to the show ring and he did this for thousands of kids. Also he helped and liked Chuck Simons from Marcus, IA who was a special friend who is now deceased. I, Gene Doran loved him like a son.
