Deane Albert Goodale, the son of Franklin Starr and Helen Alberta (McDowell) Goodale, was born June 15, 1925 in La Puente, CA. His childhood years were spent in California, where he received his early education. His family moved to Spencer, Iowa, when Deane was in 11th grade and he later graduated from Spencer High School. He entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during WWII until his honorable discharge.
Deane married Verda Marie Nelson on March 13, 1949 in Ruthven, IA. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm north of Spencer and later moved to the Royal area. In 1969, they moved to the farm where they had lived for over 30 years. In addition to farming, Deane and Verda also operated Spencer Kart Track for about six years in the late 1960's and early 70's. He was a current member of Bethany Lutheran Church of Spencer and past member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. Deane enjoyed having horses, his involvement in the Cub Scouts, taking his daughters fishing in their younger years, tinkering around the farm and fixing things. He loved reading, gardening with Verda and working with small engines. His family enjoyed his cooking, especially his pancakes on Saturday and his great sense of humor.
Deane passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verda on June 24, 2006; a sister, Dora Mae Goodale and a son-in-law, Steven Dotson.
