Delbert L. Johannsen

Delbert L. Johannsen, the son of Herman A and Ella Lahann Johannsen, was born September 1, 1912 on the family farm near Sutherland, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Sutherland area, where he received his education, graduating from Sutherland High School in 1932. Following graduation, he joined his father and brother on the farm. Later he and his brother, Ray, formed "Johannsen Brothers", a custom baling and cornshelling operation. In 1941, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army during WWII, achieving the rank of Staff Sgt. from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. Del married Anneliese Sass on December 16, 1953 in Sutherland, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed for many years, until his retirement in 1981. He was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. He was a 50 year member and Past Commander of American Legion Post #152 in Sutherland. He was also a longtime member of VFW Post #3159 in Spencer. Del was a 67 year member and Past Master of the Abiff Lodge #347 of Sutherland, where he also served as Secretary for 49 years. He was a member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite and Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City. Del passed away at the Primghar Care Center in Primghar, Iowa on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Anneliese, on January 4, 1982. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Edward of Sutherland; a brother, Raymond Johannsen and his wife, Wynona, of Sutherland; a niece, Heike Clausen and her husband, Johannes, of Ramstedt, Germany; a nephew, Klaus Dieter Otzen, of Schleswig, Germany; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Thursday, October 9, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. Masonic services will be conducted at the Warner Funeral Home in Sutherland at 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, October 8 by Abiff Lodge #347 of Sutherland, Iowa.

Visitation will begin 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 8, with the family present from 5 to 7:30 P.M., Wednesday Evening at the Warner Funeral Home in Sutherland.
