Delmar R Brockshus

Delmar Roy Brockshus, age 85 of Spencer, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, October 16 at his home. Delmar Roy Brockshus was born on June 13, 1939 in Hartley, Iowa to parents Louis A. Brockshus and Lilly G. (Lange) Brockshus. Del grew up at May City, Iowa and attended country schools there until the seventh grade. He then attended school in Hartley, Iowa graduating in 1957.

On August 24, 1958 he was united in marriage to Charin Marie Woodrich at the American Lutheran Church in Melvin, Iowa. The marriage was officiated by Charin’s father Reverend Glen Woodrich. This union was blessed with sons: Todd Dale and Ross Robert and daughter Jill Marie. Early married years were spent on a farm near May City, Iowa, with later moves to Round Lake, Minnesota, Ames, Iowa and Shenandoah, Iowa before settling in Spencer, Iowa in 1966. Del, with the assistance of Charin received a B.S. degree in Horticulture from Iowa State University in 1965. In 1967, they opened Del’s Garden Center. With help from Charin and the family, Del joyfully operated the Garden Center until his retirement in 2017.

Del’s passion and pride was his family. He was immensely proud of their activities and accomplishments. He loved the Lord and had a servant attitude. Because of that, he served his church in various capacities, he served on the Board of the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association, he served twelve years as a member of the Spencer Community Schools Board of Directors and twenty four years as member of the Clay County Board of Supervisors plus he served on numerous Boards and Committees in the community. His relished cooperative decision making for the benefit for those he and others served.

Those left to cherish his memory are: Sons, Todd (Barbara) of Spencer; Ross (Beth) of Spencer and daughter Jill (Mark) of Sioux Center, Iowa. Del’s grandchildren of Todd and Barb Brockshus are David and wife Jenna, Dr. Aaron and wife Dr. Ellecia, Hannah and husband Aaron Dibble and Isaac Robert. Del’s grandchildren of Ross and Beth Brockshus are Isaac Louis and wife Alison, Samuel and wife Megan, Chloe and husband Cole Deike. Del’s grandchildren of Jill and Mark Hulshof are Kacey, Ty and Reid. His great-grandchildren are Russell, Della, and Jack Deike, Lincoln and Clare Brockshus, Grey and Vada Brockshus, Jesse and Levi Dibble and Brayden Brockshus.

Del is preceded in death by his wife Charin and immediate family members.
