Denise Lorrene Phillips

May 13, 1959 — December 22, 2011

Denise was born in Perry, Iowa to Avis and Dick Phillips. She attended grade school in Blair, Nebraska and graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in 1977. Denise went to Iowa Lakes Community College where she earned her Licensed Practical Nurse degree and later worked at the Palo Alto Hospital where her favorite duty was taking care of the new born babies. She later went back to college to earn her RN and then went to Sioux Falls, SD to work at the Sanford Hospital. In later years, she worked for ILCC as an instructor, then as an industrial nurse at PM Hartley in Hartley, Iowa. From there Denise became the Director of Nurses at Oak Haven Care Facility. She finished her nursing career working at the Lakes Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Poor health forced Denise to leave her nursing profession, an occupation she loved. Denise had a great love for all animals. She did horse showing with her Quarter horse, Bell's Royal Ace and won several ribbons and trophies. Denise always had a dog in her life, the last two being Chocolate Labs, Honey and Zeke, with many kitties as well. It was not unusual to hear her talking about bottle feeding a kitten that had lost its mommy or taking care of a stray that found its way to her door. She would have adopted all the lost animals of the world if she could have. Denise passed away at her home in Spencer on December 22, 2011. She is preceded in death by her sister Teresa Davis as well as grandparents, Clar and Gertrude Phillips and Earnest and Ruth Phipps. She is survived by her father, Richard Phillips of Vail, AZ, and his wife Polly; her mother, Avis Davis, brother Dan Davis, his wife Deb and their son Michael, all of Spirit Lake, Iowa as well as a host of other relatives and friends. We thank her for the wonderful memories and friendship she brought to us. She will be missed.
