Dennis Bruce Oviatt, the son of Dwain and Phyllis (Fogarty) Oviatt, was born on November 4, 1958 in the Spencer Municipal Hospital, Spencer, Iowa. He was raised in Dickens and Spencer, Iowa. He attended Spencer High School, where he graduated in the class of 1977. He attended the Culinary Institute Des Moines Area Community College. At 19, Dennis rode his motorcycle to Colorado, fell in love with the mountains and decided to stay. He was the owner and chef of Café Food in Boulder, Colorado for 21 years. He took pride in the homemade food he prepared and served. He roasted whole turkeys for sandwiches, made soups from scratch, baked desserts and hand kneaded his famous German crusty rolls. Dennis had a loyal customer base who came for the food, but stayed for his good natured ribbing and friendly banter. Dennis loved playing poker with his friends. He was an active geocacher and never missed an opportunity to drag along anyone willing, or not, so they could share in the fun. Dennis enjoyed the beauty of nature and loved to hike, especially in the Rocky Mountains. He loved traveling and served as the official tour guide for visiting family. Dennis was a beloved uncle, his nieces and nephews adored him and enjoyed spending time with him. Dennis considered himself to be lucky to have a large, close family. On Wednesday May 13, 2020, Dennis passed away at the age of 61. Dennis is preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis (Fogarty) Oviatt and brother, Philip Oviatt. Dennis is survived by his father, Dwain Oviatt, of Spencer, and four siblings Pat and his wife Cindy of Spencer, Kevin Oviatt of Spencer, Sheila and her husband David Stoeckel of Forest City, Iowa, and Nyra and her husband Jerry Sondag of Persia, Iowa. Dennis is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery in Spencer, Iowa.
