Dennis Ray 'Shorty' Steffens

June 11, 1944 — August 26, 2009

Dennis Ray "Shorty" Steffens, the son of Raymond and Pearl (Sass) Steffens, was born June 11, 1944 in Hartley, Iowa. He lived with his family in Hartley for one year, before moving to a farm northeast of Primghar. Shorty received his education at Primghar, graduating from Primghar High School in 1962. After his schooling, Shorty worked for the Highway Patrol in Northwest Iowa for a few years. He then worked for several businesses in the Midwest, including Topsoil Schoenewe, Kerber Milling, Fitzpatrick's Chevrolet and most recently, Menards. He was well known in the Softball Circuit in northwest Iowa, playing for Cherokee Hamms and later Spencer Budweiser for several years. The pinnacle of his career was when they went to the National Fastpitch Softball Tournament in 1979, when playing for Spencer Bud. Shorty also was well known in high school softball and baseball, working as an umpire for boy's baseball and girl's softball as well as college baseball and softball. He was invited to umpire at the High school state tournament throughout his career. Shorty passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the age of 65. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Larry in infancy. He is survived by one daughter, Denise Zenkovich and her husband, Joe of Spencer; four sons: Todd Steffens and his wife, Rickaya of Spencer, Tom Steffens and his wife, Patty of Spirit Lake, IA, Shon Steffens and his wife, Linda of Paullina, IA and Ryan Steffens of Sioux Center, IA; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers: David Steffens and his wife, Marjorie and Donald Steffens and his wife, Wanda all of Primghar, IA; other relatives and many friends. Life Is like softball. Something new every inning. A few good plays and you could make it big. Slide into situations and make a big scene. Everyone makes errors Winning is everything to some people. But the game is always too short. When my games are over And my seasons are done, God, let me play on your team, Just like your son. Dennis (Shorty) was actively pursuing a stronger relationship with God in the Catholic Tradition and he believed the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist was worth pursuing; therefore, Dennis is Baptized by Intention in the Catholic Faith.
