Donald (Bill) Hewitt Woodall, was born September 18, 1921, to William and Mary (Powell) Woodall. His birthplace was the farm home in Highland Township north of Sutherland. The Woodall's had moved to this farmstead in 1892 from Sioux County. He had three sisters; Ella, Genevieve, Edna; and two brothers Wayne and Merle.
Bill attended the Sutherland School for twelve years, graduating in 1940. His class has had frequent reunions and they have kept in touch with one another.
Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1943, but received a medical discharge. So he returned to the farm where he assisted his father with raising hogs, Hereford cattle, and doing a fine job of field work.
On June 15, 1966, he married Louise Merrill, a teacher in the Sutherland School. They were blessed with two stalwart sons, Philip and John who continue the farming operation.
Philip was married in 2000 to Beth Sibenaller. They have become parents to Benjamin James and Abby Louise. So Bill was a grandfather to two beautiful children.
In June 2005, Bill entered the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley. While there he received care from a compassionate staff.
He was a member of the Methodist Church in Sutherland and a friend of the Church of Christ. He also belonged to the American Legion and Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife, sons: Philip of Sutherland and John of Hartley; the grandchildren; sister, Edna Erichsen; and a host of neighbors and friends.
