Donald Dennis Linnan was born September 19, 1929 in Fort Dodge, IA to William and Berniece (Cavanaugh) Linnan. He grew up in Pocahontas, graduating from Sacred Heart Catholic School and received his Civil Engineering degree from Iowa State College.
Don married Joan Wainwright on January 22, 1955 in Pocahontas, IA. They lived in Pocahontas while Don worked with his father in the family owned construction company. They later moved to Des Moines where he worked for the DOT.
In 1959, they moved to Storm Lake where Don was the Buena Vista County Engineer for 35 years. He served as president of the Association of County Engineers during this time and received many recognition awards from the State of Iowa for his engineering work.
He coached Little League baseball and served on many boards, including: Big Brothers, St. Mary’s School Board, Knights of Columbus’ Columbus Club, Lake Creek Country Club and the former Northwest Aging Association. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 through 1953, during the Korean War, and was honored to participate in the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in May 2015.
Don enjoyed vacationing with family, golfing, fishing and playing cards. Recently, Don found enjoyment playing pool with fellow residents at the Highlands.
Don passed away on December 15, 2018 at the Spencer Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Colleen Rabenberg; his parents, William and Berniece; and his in-laws, Ray and Ruby Wainwright.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joan; his children Ron Rabenberg, Brian (Barb) Linnan, Ann Marie (David) Linnan-Smith, Maureen (Ron) Sippel, Joni (Brent) Sliefert, Amy (Richard) Noah; 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
