Donald Harvey Goettsch, age 86 of Sutherland, IA, passed away April 3, 2020, at his home.
Don was born May 31, 1933, near Holstein, IA, the son of Harvey and Margaret Cipperley Goettsch. He was raised on a farm near Holstein.
On December 4, 1955, he married Sandra Sauter at her parent’s home in Sutherland. Don enlisted in the National Guard in 1949 and served until 1957. Two of these years were in active duty at Fort Campbell, KY, and Fort Eustis, VA. He worked at Simonsen’s in Quimby, and on a turkey farm until they moved to Sandra’s uncle’s farm in 1968 near Sutherland. They were still farming when Don passed away.
Don loved to fish and go coyote hunting with the guys. But his biggest love was his garden. The community lost a green thumb.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years; three children: son, Lyle and Gloria Goettsch of Peterson, IA, daughter, Teresa Mackey of Peterson, IA, and son, Brian Goettsch of Sutherland, IA; five grandchildren: Trisha, Julie, Kimberley, Darren and Bryan; four great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Goettsch of Washta, IA; sister, Frances Nagel of Ida Grove, IA; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Margaret Goettsch; his sister and husband, Beth and Harlen Lingle; Sandra’s parents, Kenneth and Isabelle Elsbury; and her brother, Freddie Sauter.
