Donald Ebel

Donald Ebel, the son of Walter and Clara (Hoppe) Ebel, was born August 28, 1938, near Granville, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Germantown area where he received his early education at St. John Lutheran School. He was baptized on September 18, 1938, and confirmed on May 11, 1952 at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown, IA. He later graduated from Paullina High School in 1956. He entered the military and served with the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge. Don married Janice Schoening on August 24, 1961, at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. Following their marriage, they farmed northeast of Sutherland. They moved to the town of Sutherland in 2004. He was a faithful active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland where he held several different offices over the years. He trusted in the Lord Jesus as his Savior. Don thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren and especially enjoyed his family vacations. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed fishing and woodworking in his spare time. He was a member of the American Legion Post #152 of Sutherland, as well as a director on several boards including the O'Brien County REC Board, Sutherland Farmer's Coop Board and the Security State Bank Board. Donald passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, November 11, 2011, at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Hannah Ebel; his parents; three sisters: Helen, Velma and Bernice; and two brothers, Roy and Harry. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janice of Sutherland; his children and their spouses: Jeff & Georgette Ebel of Sutherland, IA, Bob & Carol Bird of Kingsley, IA, Paul & Terry Paulsen of Cleghorn, IA, and Andy & Ginger Ebel of Sutherland, IA; 11 grandchildren: Adrianna Ebel; Jordan, Allison & Rachel Bird; Cody, Austin & Justin Paulsen; and Grace, Avery, Landon & Abbie Ebel; two sisters: Clara & Delmar Sickelka of Sutherland, IA, and Lillian & Grant Lage of Audubon, MN; one brother-in-law, Harold Dau of Sutherland, IA; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Ebel and Margaret Ebel both of Paullina, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 14 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland, Iowa.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 13, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Warner Funeral Home in Sutherland.
