Donald Gay Black, the son of Lester Gay and Ora Maude Williams Black, was born April 25, 1920, in Wilder, Idaho. As an infant, his family moved to Rossie, Iowa where he attended grade school and graduated from the Rossie High School. Following his schooling, Don entered the U.S. Navy in 1937 until his honorable discharge in 1941. He then joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 and served until his honorable discharge in 1945.
Don married Frances "Fran" Rena Bleeker on July 26, 1944, in South Sioux City, NE. Following their marriage, they made their home in Spencer. Don worked for Spencer Dairy for 10 years, Wonder Bread for 24 years and also for 12 years served as custodian for the Hope Reformed Church; where as an active member of the church he served as Elder, Deacon and taught Sunday School. He was most recently an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. He loved all sport events and activities with Spencer schools, watching the birds and feeding his tamed squirrel. He also loved spending time at the lake with his family and friends having fun and lots of laughs.
Don passed away at his home in Spencer, Iowa on August 2, 2010 at the age of 90. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Fran on May 19, 2009; two brothers: Kenneth and Talmadge "Tam" Black and two half brothers: Paul & Loren.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Diana and her husband, Gary Kilpatrick of Spirit Lake, Iowa; one grandson, Jon Kilpatrick and his wife, Bonnie; two great-grandchildren: Breanna and Dylan; two sisters-in-law: LaVon Black and Lucille Fear, both of Spencer, Iowa; one brother-in-law, LaVern Bleeker of Phoenix, Arizona; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
