Donald Maschino

July 23, 1921 — May 4, 2017

Donald (Don) Franklin Maschino was born in Pomeroy, IA to George and Carrie Maschino July 23, 1921 and passed away May 4, 2017. Don graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1938. He enlisted in the US Army Reserves in September 1942 and after graduating from radio school in Des Moines and radar training at the University of Iowa, he was called into active service. Following the end of WWII, while being honorably discharged, he decided to reenter the reserves for an additional three years. In October, 2009, Don participated in the Siouxland Honor Flight which honored the group for their active duty during WWII. They were flown to Washington, D.C., for a tour of the national monuments and changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In June, 1948, he married Verla Eleanor Evans of Odebolt, IA. They were married 52+ years until Verla's death, January 2001. They were avid golfers, loved dancing at many big band dances, and were active members in the United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. Don completed the Masonic third degree and then took the York Rites. He became a Master Mason in the Sibley, IA chapter and eventually became a 50+ year member of both the Masonic fraternity and Abu-Bekr Shriners in Sioux City. Don began working at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in March, 1946, as an installer in Storm Lake and retired in 1977 as an exchange manager in Shenandoah. He and Verla established many lasting friendships in the phone company and Iowa communities in which they lived: Storm Lake, Cherokee, Newell, Sibley, and Shenandoah. Following his retirement in 1977, they moved to Verla's farm homestead in rural Odebolt. They became snowbirds in 1983 - purchasing a condo in Mesa, AZ. After selling the farm in 1991, they moved to Sac City and finally to Spencer in 2000. In October, 2003, Don married Beverly Roberson of Spencer. They spent their time in Mesa, AZ each winter and in both communities enjoyed attending big band dances, theatre productions; became involved in church activities and attended many city and Bell Telephone Pioneer events. They traveled to visit Bev's daughters nearly every year and frequently visited with extended family and friends in communities surrounding Spencer and Mesa. Don is survived by his wife, Bev; daughters Kathy (Gary) Lieberman, Tempe, AZ; Deb (Gary) Schaefer, Columbus, NE; five grandchildren: Mica Bissinger, Tempe, AZ; Mark (Tamara) Lieberman, Scottsdale, AZ; Angela (Russ) Williams, Columbus, NE; Chaney (Eric) Phipps, Nevada, IA; Melissa (Chad) Schwichtenberg, Columbus, NE; nine great-grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren.
