Donald Nelson

Donald Nelson, the son of James Elbert and Daisy Iowa DeWitt Nelson, was born in Hartley, Iowa on April 24, 1922. His parents were farmers between Hartley and Royal. He received his early education in Royal. Donald was president of his senior class and graduated from the Royal High School as Valedictorian. Following his schooling, Donald enlisted with the United States Army on March 5, 1943, serving during W.W.II in the Pacific arena. He served in the Army 727th Amphibian Tractor Battalion Group and trained in Fort Ord, CA. He was honorably discharged on December 19, 1945. Donald married Jessie on June 1, 1947, in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed near Sutherland for over 50 years and still owned the farm at his death. Following retirement, Donald and Jesse enjoyed spending their winters in California with their daughter and family. Mr. Nelson passed away on November 10, 2010 at Los Gatos El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos, California. He had gone in for a minor procedure the day before and was in good health until the last 24 hours of his life. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 62 years, Jessie on January 6, 2010. He is survived by one brother, Orville Nelson of Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Sandra Skog of Fridley, MN and Catherine Curry of Sunnyvale, CA; two grandchildren Robert Curry, Jr. of Hollister and Michelle Curry of Grover Beach, CA; 4 great grandchildren: Wyatt E. Curry and Robert Mathew Curry of Hollister, CA, Macy Burch of Amo, IN and Lucas Carlstrom of San Jose, CA.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 A.M., Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland
